Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619-1683), as 'Surintendant des Batiments' commissioned plans from several French and foreign architects to construct the great front facing St Germain l'Auxerrois which was to close the Louvre on the east. Marot's engraving shows Gian Lorenzo Bernini's third scheme from 1665.
