MASTER of the Codex of Saint George
(active first half of the 14th century)

Missal (Folio 58)

1320s
Tempera and gold on parchment, 375 x 255 mm
The Morgan Library and Museum, New York

The Morgan Missal is considered as a masterpiece of Italian Gothic manuscript painting and is universally attributed to the Master of the Codex of Saint George. It is assumed that the Codex and the Missal were part of the same commission for Cardinal Jacopo Stefaneschi.

The Missal has numerous filigree and decorated initials, 2 and 3 lines high. There are four historiated initials. On folio 58 a Consecration is depicted in an initial T.
