MASTER of the Codex of Saint George
(active first half of the 14th century)

The Crucifixion

1330-35
Tempera and gold on panel, 46 x 30 cm
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

The two panels in New York, The Crucifixion and The Lamentation are the masterpieces of the Master of the Codex of Saint George. Although there is no evidence to connect the commission for these panels directly to cardinal Jacopo Stefaneschi, it is clear that they must have been conceived and executed while the Master was otherwise employed by the cardinal at Avignon. They may well be among his last surviving works.
