The Master of the Codex of St George is named for a volume from an illuminated missal in the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana.
This jewel-like diptych is in a a remarkably pure state of preservation and complete with its original frame. The left panel depicts the Virgin and Child Enthroned with a Donor, while the right panel shows the Crucifixion with a Donor. The Florentine roots of the Master's style are even more apparent in this diptych than in any other works by him. The figures in both scenes of this diptych have a spatial presence and an emotional intensity that precociously reflect the innovations of Giotto, notwithstanding their intimate scale, and that are directly reminiscent of the Master's probable teacher, Lippo di Benivieni.
