Angels supporting coat of arms

c. 1615
Stucco
Chapel of the Trinité, Fontainebleau

The chapel of the Trinité at Fontainebleau provides a good example of the interior decoration of the period. The main ornamentation of the ceiling dates from the reign of Henry IV, and consists of a combination of stucco frames and painted panels in the manner to be seen in all parts of the palace. Over the altar and the royal gallery, however, Marie de' Medici added two big stucco groups of angels supporting her coat of arms in the new style which was to be current in France during the period c. 1615-25. Instead of curving over like pieces of cut leather, the forms are now more like a shell or even the lobe of an ear.

This form of decoration was widely used during the regency of Marie de' Medici, in stone or wood work.
