This book contains a compilation of various moral discourses by Laurent de Bois, a Dominican monk. The monk compiled the text in 1279 for the French King Philip III (reigned 12170-1285), whose father confessor he was. This edifying work enjoyed great popularity and was translated into several languages. The 13 miniatures of the manuscript are masterpieces from Master Honoré, the outstanding Parisian miniaturist.
The illustration on folio 5v shows two scenes: Moses receiving the Ten Commandments (above) and Jews worshipping the golden calf (below).
