MASTER of the Parrot
(active 1525-50 in Antwerp)

Mary Magdalen

Oil on oak panel, 45 x 31 cm
Private collection

This Flemish Master derives his name from the parrot that occurs in several of his Madonnas. Much of his output is due to what was probably a large workshop, and attributing particular paintings from its output to a single hand is hazardous, but the present picture, showing the Magdalene seated at a table by a window, holding a gold encrusted urn, is of an order of quality that merits giving them to the Master himself.
