The Madonna and Child Enthroned

1350-75
Tempera on wood, 64 x 29 cm
Národní Galerie, Prague

The two panel paintings in the Prague museum, The Crucifixion and The Madonna and Child Enthroned, originally formed a portable altar. An interesting point in the iconography of the two panel paintings is a small cross held by the Infant Jesus in his left hand. The less usual motif is related to the text of the Gospel, "If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me" (Mt. 16, 24).
