1190s
Panel, 285 x 238 cm
Pinacoteca, Pisa

One of the earliest surviving Italian panel paintings is this anonymous and undated Crucifix. This large work, perhaps intended for a choir screen, shows Christ alive on the cross. Scenes from the Passion and subsequent events are placed around him. This type of cross is termed 'Christus Triumphans'.
