St Francis and Eight Scenes from his Life (detail)

c.1250
Tempera on wood
Museo Civico, Pistoia

The picture shows one of the eight scenes of the Pistoian altarpiece. Pointed in shape, the altarpiece was originally in the local church of San Francesco al Prato. It revisits the usual typology of images present in the Franciscan churches of the region since the beginning of the thirteenth century, an example being the altarpiece by Bonaventura Berlinghieri.
