Representation of the Twelve Months (detail)

1391-1407
Fresco
Eagle'a Tower, Castello del Buonconsiglio, Trent

International Gothic left an imprint on northern Italy as exemplified by a fresco cycle by an unknown painter in the city of Trent in the foothills of the Alps, north of Verona. commissioned sometime between 1391 and 1407 by the city's prince-bishop, Georg von Lichtenstein, the frescoes cover the walls of one of the large towers in his residence, the Castello del Buonconsiglio. They represent the twelve months of the year. The scenes shown here are, from left to right, the months of April, May, June, and July. Similar representations appear in luxurious Burgundian manuscripts of this time, such as the Limbourg Brother's Très riches heures du Duc de Berry.
