This piece, probably from Spoleto, is an early representation of the Christus patiens, i.e. of the suffering Christ. The composition is characterized by one-dimensionality and a calligraphic quality in its details. The facial features, the locks of hair, the chest and the loin-cloth are delicately delineated.
