Equestrian Statue of Mastino II della Scala

1345-50
Marble
Museo Civico di Castelvecchio, Verona

This is the original of the equestrian statue of Mastino II della Scala from his monument among the Scaliger Tombs at Santa Maria Antica in Verona. The statue on the monument was replaced by a copy.

Mastino II della Scala (1308-1351) was lord of Verona, a member of the ruling della Scala family. In the monument erected in his life-time, the barbaric accents of the equestrian statue on the companion monument of Cangrande I are modified. A visor conceals the rider's features and his horse looks straight ahead, a heraldic image relying upon decorative accidentals for its effect.
