Giuliano de' Medici, son of Piero and brother of Lorenzo the Magnificent, died at only twenty-five years of age in the Pazzi conspiracy on April 26, 1478. The sculptor, who portrayed Giuliano after his death, probably had available a death cast, as was common in this period.
