Tomb monument to Filippo Lippi

c. 1490
Marble
Duomo, Spoleto

The marble tomb monument to the painter Fra Filippo Lippi was commissioned by Lorenzo de' Medici some twenty years after the painter's death, as a memorial to the painter's lifelong ties to the house of Medici. Thanks to Vasari's detailed account, it seems virtually certain that Filippino Lippi himself executed the design for the richly decorated wall monument that was placed below the organ and above the door to the sacristy. The epigram on the monument was written by Angelo Poliziano.
