Snake

1500-10
Lead and tin alloy, partially painted, 22 x 7 x 3 cm
Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna

This extremely realistic representation of a snake was created through casting from nature. At the beginning of the 16th century, starting from Padua, the casting from nature, a technique already well-known since antiquity, enjoyed renewed popularity, which was reflected in the creation, primarily from bronze, of numerous works of art and everyday objects. The university city of Padua was a centre of Aristotelianism around 1500 and in that school of thought it is believed that art must imitate nature.
