UNKNOWN MASTER, Italian
(active c. 1525-1550)

Portrait Medal of Paolo Giovio

1525-50
Bronze, diameter 4,3 cm
Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna

The medal probably represents Paolo Giovio (1483-1552) who was an Italian physician, historian and biographer, and prelate. The profile head with the horns and ears of a faun is composed of animal parts: the forehead is the mouth of a lion, the chin is a scaly fish, the nose is a toad. The back side of the medal shows a satyr-head composed of phalluses. This head is identical to that from the Aretino medal produced at about the same time.
