In 1737, after Gian Gastone de' Medici passed away without leaving heirs, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany passed to Francesco Stefano of Lorraine, husband of the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa of Habsburg. This emblem, in which the crowned emblem of the Lorraine is shown together with that of the Medici, was exhibited throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries inside the semiprecious stone manufactory in Florence.
