The statue of the naked Adam, which once had a companion Eve figure, stood originally in the south transept of Notre-Dame in Paris. It is the only surviving life-sized nude figure in 13th-century French sculpture. The details of the body of this slender, somewhat elongated, figure are worked delicately. Unobscured by clothing, the contrapposto, with its subtle alterations of direction, is remarkable.
