This painting is the central panel of a triptych, the wings of the triptych representing donor portraits were executed by another hand. The anonymous artist, referred to as the Master of the Groote Adoration, followed the late Gothic Mannerist style developed around Quentin Massys and Joos van Cleve. These artists are called "Antwerp Mannerists."
