Oil on panel, 78 x 65 cm
Jagdschloss Grunewald, Berlin

This panel was painted by a close follower of Jan Gossart. Quite a number of Gossart's mature and late works begin to move his art into a progressively more Mannerist direction. The prevailing stylistic features here are twisted, oddly foreshortened figures as well as juxtapositions of figures in contrasting poses in curiously compressed, architecturally confused spaces. Anonymous artists directly following him worked in an even more exaggerated style, like the artist who painted the present panel.
