Madonna with Child

16th century
Amber
Galleria Palatina (Palazzo Pitti), Florence

Amber, a fossilized resin of prehistoric origin, was typically found on the shores of the eastern section of the Baltic Sea, and in particular around the city of Königsberg (now Kaliningrad in Russia), where the leading centre for amber working flourished during the sixteenth century. This small statuette of a Madonna with Child originated from one of the German workshops.
