Male Figure after Masaccio, Arm Studies (recto)1492-93Red chalk, pen and brown ink, 317 x 197 mm Staatliche Gaphische Sammlung, Munich | |
This drawing is Michelangelo's copy of St Peter's figure in Masaccio's Tribute Money in the Cappella Brancacci in Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence. It is part of a series of early drawings in which he copied with minor alterations figures from the works of the older Florentine masters, Giotto and Masaccio. The figure on this sheet is drawn by pen, but a preliminary drawing in red chalk is visible beneath the figure. Red chalk was first used in drawing by Leonardo. The verso of the sheet contains anatomical studies. |
