The recto of this sheet contains a study of a soldier fastening his comrade's armour at the shoulder. This drawing is among the most famous drafts for the Battle of Cascina. It bears close resemblance to the figure in the right half of the final cartoon.

The verso of the sheet represents a compositional sketch for the depiction of Judith and Holofernes.
