Study of Two Women, One with Child (verso)

c. 1503
Pen in brown, over traces of drawing in leadpoint, 375 x 197 mm
Musée du Louvre, Paris

These studies are on the verso of the sheet depicting a male nude. The sitting female figure on the left was drawn first. On the right Michelangelo repeated the figure as the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus seated on her raised left leg. Links have been suggested to various works by Michelangelo, namely the Madonna of Bruges, the Tondo Taddei, the Tondo Pitti, as well as the Tondo Doni.
