There are various suggestions by scholars regarding the subject of this drawing, which is most likely a classical rather than a religious one. The Rape of Persephone and the Rape of the Sabine Women were proposed, and there could be a connection with Michelangelo's planned projects for the marble group in front of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.
On the verso of the sheet, the same motif is drawn, which is generally not considered to be in Michelangelo's own hand.
