MICHELANGELO Buonarroti
(b. 1475, Caprese, d. 1564, Roma)

The Sacrifice of Isaac

1524-26
Black and red chalk, 415 x 290 mm
Casa Buonarroti, Florence

This drawing of The Sacrifice of Isaac is probably connected to a planned commission for a double tomb of Pope Clement VII and Pope Leo X. While Michelangelo faithfully follows the biblical account, in designing the composition he seems to have had in his mind's eye the bronze reliefs on the same subject by Lorenzo Ghiberti and Filippo Brunelleschi.
