MICHELANGELO Buonarroti
(b. 1475, Caprese, d. 1564, Roma)

Male Head in Profile and Leg Studies (recto)

1511-12
Red chalk, 265 x 195 mm
Teylers Museum, Haarlem

The head on the recto of this sheet is related to the Ignudo at the right above the Persian Sibyl on the Sistine ceiling. The face on the head study has the same expression of startled surprise and astonishment as the one in the fresco. The two vertical leg studies are connected to the right leg of God the Father in the Creation of Adam scene.
