Three Studies of a Left Arm and Shoulder

1524-25
Black chalk, 162 x 264 mm
Teylers Museum, Haarlem

This drawing is related to the statue of Day at the tomb of Giuliano de' Medici in the Medici Chapel in San Lorenzo, Florence.

Among the extant drawings for the allegories of the times of the day in the Medici Chapel, there are more studies for Day, which the artist drew from various angles after a living model. These reveal how carefully the artist prepared every side of his figures, studying them even from angles which the viewer - as in the present case - would never see.
