MICHELANGELO Buonarroti
(b. 1475, Caprese, d. 1564, Roma)

Woman with a Distaff and Three Children (recto)

1515-20
Red chalk and traces of black chalk, 212 x 283 mm
Christ Church Picture Gallery, Oxford

The subject of the drawing on the recto of this sheet is not completely explained. It could be either religious (a Holy Family) or a genre scene. It has been assumed that the red chalk study was intended as a draft for an unidentified painting by Sebastiano del Piombo.

The verso contains studies of a left male leg.
