MICHELANGELO Buonarroti
(b. 1475, Caprese, d. 1564, Roma)

Study of a Child's Head (recto)

1524-26
Black chalk, 235 x 161 mm
Teylers Museum, Haarlem

This portrait was probably drawn from a living model, who could be either a child serving as model in Michelangelo's workshop, or one of the three children of his favourite brother, Buonarroto.

The red-chalk studies on the verso of the sheet are not by Michelangelo, but seem to be based on a model by the master.
