MICHELANGELO Buonarroti
(b. 1475, Caprese, d. 1564, Roma)

Capitoline Hill

1568
Drawing
Biblioteca Apostolica, Vatican

This drawing (after Etienne Dupérac) shows a reconstruction of Michelangelo's project. The pavement, although apparently planned by Michelangelo, was not laid until 1940 when Mussolini recognized the historical importance of the Capitoline as a symbol of governance.
