The palaces at either side of the square were altered by Giacomo della Porta after Michelangelo's death, but much of Michelangelo's original work remains. From the point of view of architectural history the most important innovation made in these palaces was the introduction of the so-called Giant Order; that is, a pilaster or column which runs through two whole storeys.
