Porta Pia, Rome

Traces of Michelangelo's architectural activities are found in some parts of Rome. There are, for example, the sombre, crenellated bastions of the Porta Pia, where it is evident that the architect was primarily a sculptor. The central section, belonging to the 19th century, greatly weakens the dignified appearance of the original.
