This vessel is considered a masterpiece of the Milanese Gasparo Miseroni. As one of the most important stonecutters of his time, he established the fame of the Miseroni workshop around the middle of the sixteenth century. The workshop remained active through many generations, providing numerous royal houses with its objects. Between 1565 and 1571, he also frequently supplied rock crystal containers to the court of Emperor Maximilian II in Vienna. Gasparo was credited for the invention of this type of bowl in the shape of a shell with dragon, of which numerous variations survived.
