St. Ludwig's church, Darmstadt

The Catholic church of St. Ludwig in Darmstadt was built by Georg Moller, who had designed a number of pioneering buildings in the royal seat of Hessen. It turns to the Pantheon, but comes up with a design highly reduced both grammatically and decoratively. The cylindrical lower part and semi-circular dome display the stereometric simplicity and clarity of Revolutionary architecture. Inside, the dome is carried on 28 free-standing columns. The original coffering was destroyed by bomb damage.
