NEER, Aert van der
(b. 1603/04, Amsterdam, d. 1677, Amsterdam)

Night Landscape with a River

Oil on canvas, 61 x 86 cm
The Hermitage, St. Petersburg

Van der Neer enriched the tonal landscape, one of the outstanding achievements of 17th-century Dutch painting, with moonlit, and less often, sunset views. Without pursuing monumentality or outpourings of emotion, he achieved great mastery in conveying nuances of lighting. In the 19th century he was rated highly by both the pioneers of Realist landscape and the German Romantics.
