The Arts Flourishing in Munich

1861
Oil on canvas, 73 x 101 cm
Sammlung Schack, Munich

With the patronage of King Ludwig I, Munich became an art centre of the first rank, called the "Athens on the Isar". By this painting, Neureuther set a monument to Munich's rise to artistic fame. Cornelius is shown enthroned in a triple-arched hall, surrounded by celebrated Munich painters. Architects and art-lovers are also to be seen.
