PALMA GIOVANE
(b. 1548, Venezia, d. 1628, Venezia)

Victory of Francesco Bembo over the Fleet of Filippo Maria Visconti

1578
Oil on canvas
Palazzo Ducale, Venice

The battle scenes and allegories on the ceiling of the Sala del Maggior Consiglio (Hall of the Great Council) in the Palazzo Ducale were commissioned by the spring of 1578, after the disastrous fire of 1577. Palma Giovane had the opportunity to establish himself as the most promising young artist in Venice. On the ceiling he executed the central oval Venice Crowned by Victory, a spectacular example of perspective and compositional illusionism with its dynamic and foreshortened forms, as well as the two side panels, the Victory of Francesco Bembo over the Fleet of Filippo Maria Visconti and the Reconquest of Padua by Andrea Gritti.
