PALMA GIOVANE
(b. 1548, Venezia, d. 1628, Venezia)

Doge Pietro Loredan Beseeching the Virgin

1595
Oil on canvas
Palazzo Ducale, Venice

After the death of Veronese and Tintoretto, Palma Giovane was chosen to decorate the state chambers in the Palazzo Ducale. He produced numerous votive allegories in which his inventiveness gradually declined, but the paintings remain interesting for their backgrounds, historical details, and as a record of manners.

The painting Doge Pietro Loredan Beseeching the Virgin is on the wall of the Sala del Senato (Hall of the Senate) in the Palazzo Ducale. It represents the Doge Pietro Loredan beseeching the Virgin for the end of the famine and victory over the Turks.
