The most renowned specialist in the Southern Netherlands in the field of marine painting was Bonaventura Peeters, who became a master in Antwerp in 1634. His early work, dating from the 1630s consists partly of violent storms and disasters at sea, such as the Shipwreck. Yet Peeters shows much more sensitivity to atmosphere, so that he tends towards a more monochrome tonality.

This is the companion-piece of Storm on the Sea, also in Prague.
