The Vision of St Bernard

Oil on wood, 173 x 170 cm
Alte Pinakothek, Munich

This altarpiece comes from the Nasi family chapel in Santa Maria Maddalena dei Pazzi in Florence.

Perugino's tightly composed picture carefully isolates the landscape through a series of arches. The architecture acts as both a frame for nature and a structural underpinning for the figures who are virtually attached to the piers on either side of the opening.
