Nailing of Christ to the Cross

1538
Oil on panel transferred to canvas, 146 x 100 cm
Santa Maria Incoronata, Lodi

This painting is one of four scenes depicted on the side walls of the Santa Maria Incoronata in Lodi. The other paintings show the Capture of Christ, the Flagellation, and Christ's Falling beneath the Cross. The scene of Nailing clearly shows Callisto's attention to objective visual truth, especially in the vivid rendering of the instruments of torture in the foreground.
