Duomo, Florence

Pietro di Giovanni was an Italian sculptor of German origin. He was the most typical sculptor in Florence before the advent of the Ghiberti school. He received numerous commissions during the building of the Duomo, and he was the author of the inventive tabernacle of the Madonna of the Roses in Orsanmichele.

From his work in the lunette of the Porta dei Canonici on the north side of the Duomo, the artist reveals himself as being capable of a softer, more rhythmical interpretation than the style common to the time. He uses a northern sculptural language with contemporary parallels principally in the Low Countries, but also in Burgundy.
