Pulpit detail: Hercules

1302-11
Marble
Cathedral, Pisa

The outer supports of the pulpit consist of columns standing on low plinths or lions, or of full-length figures, among them Hercules.

Carved with large-scale figures, these supports form the main novelty of the conception and mark a retreat from the Gothic extremism of the Pistoia pulpit. Two of them, the Prudence and the Hercules derive from classical originals.
