Fontana Maggiore: February

1278
Bronze and marble
Piazza 4 Novembre, Perugia

The lowest basin is a 25-sided polygon with 3 twisted columns at the corners. Each side bears two reliefs, representing the Labours of the Months, the Liberal Arts, fables, Romulus and Remus (originals Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria, Perugia), heraldic beasts, and Old Testament scenes.

On 12 of the 25 sides of the base the fountain is decorated with representations of the months, each illustrated in two upright carvings.

The picture shows February from the series representing the Labours of the Months. On this relief one figure, that on the left, might derive directly from a French source, while the other is strongly classical.
