Horses in a Field

1649
Oil on panel, 24 x 30 cm
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

This painting depicts two horses near a gate in a meadow. They stand on a rise where the mane and tail of the dark horse apparently catch a lot of wind. The depiction of the animals is truly lifelike. The gate is an essential element of the composition: it forms the transition between the high foreground and the low-lying background.
