PUGET, Pierre
(b. 1620, Marseille, d. 1694, Marseille)

Door of the Hôtel de Ville at Toulon

1656
Marble
Musée Navale, Toulon

In 1656 Puget received his first important commission, for the door of the Hôtel de Ville at Toulon. The general scheme of this door was one already current in Italy, but in the treatment of the figures Puget shows great originality. In the freedom of their movement and in the fluidity of their modelling they are far more Baroque than anything of the period in the Parisian tradition.
