The flight into Egypt

1654
Etching, only state, 93 x 144 mm
Teylers Museum, Haarlem

Catalogue number: Bartsch 55.

This etching depicts the Holy Family crossing a brook on the flight into Egypt. The figure of St Joseph resembles Rembrandt's representations of beggars.

The subjects of The flight into Egypt and The rest on the flight were etched by Rembrandt several times in the 1630s and 1650s. In each decade there were etchings of beggars or vagrants that come close to Rembrandt's Josephs.
