Jan Cornelisz. Sylvius (1564-1638) was a Reformed preacher in Amsterdam. He was the husband of Saskia Uylenburgh's older cousin Aeltje Pietersdr. Uylenburgh. Rembrandt portrayed Sylvius in two etchings (Bartsch 266 and 280).

To the present posthumous portrait Petrus Scriverius (1576-1660), historian and humanist of Haarlem and Leiden, contributed a two-line Latin verse. It is preceded by a fourteen-line poem Caspar Barleus (1584-1648), a remonstrant humanist from Leiden.
